Limit or No Limit Holdem?

No limit Texas Holdem seems scary to many new poker players. And it should be. In no limit Holdem, you can lose money faster due to the unlimited betting. And you will lose money fast if you are new and unskilled. You can raise preflop with all your chips with pocket aces. Or you can go all-in when you're on tilt and trying to recover losses. It's dangerous to play no limit when you have no self-control. That is why low limit Texas Holdem is the recommended game for beginners. The betting cap serves to control the outflow of cash and protects a player from suffering heavy losses.

Yet once you have acquired more skill, discipline and experience, no limit Texas Holdem should start to look like a better choice. Let us explain why.

Texas Holdem is a game meant to be played with great skill. If all you did was deal, bet and hope the board helps your hand, how would Holdem be any different from any other game of chance? But it's not like that. You can win even without the best hands by playing personalities, not just cards. You are allowed to bluff, give off false tells, bully other players and so on. That is what makes Texas Holdem such a remarkable game.

Disadvantages of Low Limit Holdem

Unfortunately, a lot of this psychological warfare is lost in low limit games. Why? Because the betting cap render the tactics virtually useless. No matter how you try to deceive or intimidate your opponents, it just doesn't work because the cap makes it so easy to call you.

For example, it's very hard to make a bluff work in low limit Holdem. The betting cap just makes it so affordable to call. What's another $10 bet to see the next card? Again, with check-raising, it hardly works in low limit because everyone bets and calls.

So in low limit, Texas Holdem loses a lot of suspense and excitement. It degrades into a boring routine where players hope to see their outs on the board and everyone makes it to the showdown.

Advantages of No Limit Holdem

In no limit Holdem, it is not like that. Once you sit in a no limit table, you will know it. The mood changes dramatically. Everyone is edgy and more cautious. Here bluffing and other moves are more effective because players have so much more to lose. If you threaten your opponents with a huge bet, the chances of them folding are much higher than in low limit. The more of your opponents that fold, the better the odds of you winning the pot. And since there is no betting cap in no limit Holdem, you can make more money faster.

As you can see, in no limit Holdem, there is more room for strategy, skill and deception than in the non-threatening low limit games.

Low limit Texas Holdem is good for beginners who have yet to learn self-control and correct bankroll management. Once you become a more skillful and disciplined player, try switching to no limit Holdem. You can bluff more often, ends hands sooner and win bigger pots.
